Documenting the
living culture of Asia.

Walkabout Asia is a cultural media institution dedicated to documenting the living practices, ecological knowledge, and ancestral traditions of communities across the Asian region.

Our philosophy
"Culture is not a relic. It is knowledge in practice — held by people, expressed through daily life. Our work is to observe and document, before it is gone "

We do not preserve culture in archives alone. We go into the field, build relationships with communities over time, and create documentary records that belong as much to those communities as to the wider world.

Walkabout Places

Where the work has taken us.

These are the countries across Asia and beyond where we have spent time observing, listening, and documenting the practices of everyday cultural life — and many more still to come.

What we do

Programmes and Initiatives.

Different forms, one continuous body of work — each layer feeds the next.

01

Documentary Production

Long-form and short film from the field — primary-source storytelling that lets people speak in their own voice.

02

Walk The Doc Festival

An annual gathering for documentary lovers, ethnography, and the makers of cultural memory across Asia.

03

Education, Training & Capacity Building

A training and mentorship programme for emerging documentary filmmakers from across the region, with emphasis on ethical fieldwork, community-first storytelling, and documentary craft.

04

Strategic Storytelling & Communications Consulting

Whether launching an initiative, strengthening public engagement, or building trust with communities, we help organizations find stories that matter.

Current work

In the field, right now.

Tribal Kitchen Asia: Food As Living Knowledge

Our current flagship series documents the food cultures of the Jahut, Batek, and other Orang Asli communities in peninsular Malaysia — not as cuisine, but as a living record of ecological relationships, seasonal knowledge, and intergenerational memory. Each episode is co-developed with the community it documents.

Why it matters

The principles that hold the work together.

A generation of practice is being lost faster than it's being recorded. We work to slow that, carefully and credibly.

01

Living knowledge

Culture is something practiced. We document it as it moves, not as it sits in a museum.

02

Community first

Every project begins and ends with the community. Their consent, participation, and ownership of their own story is foundational to our method.

03

Asia's own voice

We believe Asia's cultural heritage must be documented by those who understand it from the inside not as spectacle for outside audiences, but as truth.

04

For the future

An open, lasting archive. Every film is a document. We build records that communities, researchers, and future generations can return to when the people who carried this knowledge are gone.

Work with us

Institutional partnerships, grants and commissioned work.

Walkabout Asia works with cultural institutions, government bodies, foundations, patrons, universities, and values-aligned brands to produce documentary work that serves both the communities we document and the broader public interest. We welcome proposals for co-production, research collaboration, and educational partnerships.

We are proud to have worked alongside organizations that believe in the power of stories to connect people, strengthen communities and create lasting impact. These partnerships reflect our shared commitment to meaningful work and authentic engagement.
